About The Finger Lakes Region

General

The Finger Lakes Region is located in Upstate New York.  The area is known for it's rolling hills and large lakes.

The Lakes

There are 11 major lakes in the Finger Lakes Region: Most of the lakes run north to south. The lakes provide excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, water skiing and other recreational activities. They also provide for some breathtaking scenery. Before swimming it might be wise to check the local news as there are occasional parasite problems caused by the abundance of waterfowl. One of the striking features of the lakes is the crystal clarity of the water, especially in Skaneateles Lake.  In a few cases, there are canals linking one or more lakes. For information about boating facilities and recreation on the lakes, please see Boating and Marinas in the Finger Lakes Region.,  Boat Tours in the Finger Lakes Region, and  Fishing and Hunting in the Finger Lakes Region

Getting There

Most travelers to the Finger Lakes will arrive by personal automobile. However, There are a few smaller airports and Bus Transportation is available. The Interstate system generally runs around the outside of the area. North-south travel is usually straightforward. However east-west travel is determined by the lakes themselves which run north and south.

The secondary roads are for the most part, well paved. Having a good map and/or GPS is a help. When traveling the secondary roads, you will find stretches with little or nothing in the way of facilities such as gas stations or restrooms so plan ahead.
